My Radio FM98.5 sharing English Version:
Qiqi: This week, with the market focusing on weaker economic growth, the us debt ceiling, high inflation rate across countries, what do u think of the current Singapore and US market?
Eric: Yes, perhaps many investors or stock investors are losing sleep due to the increased volatility. From the technical point of charting, in my view, STI has broken the 200day moving average, and may test the low made at 3100. If this support hold, we may see the STI moving up to the resistance level at 3300.
Most stocks like the banks have reported their earnings but we see consolidation now with the STI below the 200-day moving average suggest investors are taking a wait and see attitude or cautious approach before they make their investment decision.
As for the US market, I personally see support for S&P500 at 3800 level and 4300 as resistance. Similar to the year 2011 until the debt ceiling impasse is resolved by 1 June 2023, we will continue to see the S&P 500 consolidating at current levels. The next important date to watch for will be the 14 June Fed meeting rate decision which may influence the direction for the equity market.
Qiqi: In this type of situation, any specific sectors one can consider or to take note of?
Eric: Due to effects of climate change seen in many parts of the world, we are likely to see more capital allocated to renewable energy like solar and climate technology firms that supports this energy transition. Ai technology will also be a sector to consider.
More noteworthy, I see sustainability becoming an important consideration when allocating investment capital because it will affect climate, energy transition, sustainable cities, farming, biodiversity, water and food security and our future. These sectors may be the drivers for the future industrial revolution.
When is a good time to enter will depends on investors’ holding power and financial situation.
Qiqi: What advice do u have for investors and considerations?
Eric: First of all, consider your risk tolerance, time horizon and financial objective. Personally, I do not encourage one to speculate in the short term but invest with a long-term perspective using lump sum or RSP investment to meet your financial goals. Try to avoid leverage or margin to invest especially now.
If you are concerned about the individual stock market volatility, one can consider investing in international mutual funds to reduce risk.
Finally, as investment scams are becoming more prevalent or need help to invest, please work with a reputable financial professional.
